[Berlin GenArt Month] Representing Abstraction

As part of the Berlin GenArt Month – Bright Moments, fxhash and despace berlin are pleased to present Representing Abstraction, a group exhibition featuring generative artists on fxhash.

Representing Abstraction explores the relationship between contemporary generative art and the aesthetic of painterly abstraction. Generative artists have traditionally sought to distance themselves from the representational qualities of traditional art forms, instead emphasizing the raw materiality of pixels and code as well as the system- and process-based nature of the medium. The exhibition Representing Abstraction seeks to focus on a recent development that diverges from this tradition, bringing together a diverse range of artists who playfully engage with the materiality of paint and texture while adhering to a primarily abstract aesthetic.

Representing Abstraction offers a fresh perspective on the interplay between abstraction and representation, shedding new light on the affinity between the inherent randomness of generative art and the allusions to indeterminacy found in painterly gestures. Drawing on the legacy of 20th century abstraction, the works on display invite the audience to reexamine the relationship between abstraction and representation, form and matter that were raised in the early days of abstract painting.
