About this Event
Berimbau Second Floor Presents: Novos Caminhos
An Evening with Ian Coury & Igor Souza
Where the soul of Brazil meets New York City, Berimbau Second Floor invites you into an intimate listening experience unlike any other. Novos Caminhos — Portuguese for "New Ways" — brings together two of the most exciting voices in contemporary Brazilian instrumental music for an evening of discovery, virtuosity, and feeling.
The Artists
Ian Coury is a 10-string bandolim (Brazilian mandolin) prodigy from Brasília who began his musical journey at age 8 and was already sharing stages with choro legends Armandinho Macedo and Hamilton de Holanda by the time he was 12. Now 23, he is widely regarded as one of Brazil's most gifted mandolinists of his generation. A scholarship recipient at Berklee College of Music — where he earned the prestigious String Department Award — Ian has performed alongside jazz and Brazilian music icons including Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, and Toninho Horta. He was named Best Instrumentalist at Brazil's National FM Radio Festival in 2020, cementing his place among the country's finest.
Igor Souza is a Rio de Janeiro-born 7-string guitarist, arranger, and music producer hailed by the Brazilian press as the "Phenomenon of the 7 Strings." A master's degree holder from UNIRIO (Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro), Igor began playing at age 6 and has since performed across Brazil and Europe at major festivals. He is currently part of the acclaimed "Xande canta Caetano" tour, sharing the stage with Brazilian icons Xande de Pilares & Caetano Veloso.
About the Show
Though they come from different backgrounds — one from Brasília, one from Rio — Ian and Igor found an immediate connection the moment they first played together. Between a choro and a samba, something clicked: a shared reverence for tradition and a mutual desire to push it forward. Novos Caminhos is the result — a duo project rooted in the deep wells of Choro and Samba, reimagined with fresh perspective and precision.
This is not background music. This is music made to be heard.
Berimbau Second Floor is New York City's home for Brazilian culture and energy — an intimate upstairs space where the rhythms, moods, and artistry of Brazil come alive in the heart of Manhattan. Seating is limited, and the room is designed for listening.
