Join us on Monday 23 September for the next instalment in the BEMAC Discussions series: Ethics of Sharing the Personal.
Artists often blur the lines between the public and the private, through sharing personal stories and experiences, both their own and other people’s. Join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion where we delve into the ethical considerations artists face when sharing deeply personal stories through their creative expression. Together, we will reflect on how artists navigate the delicate balance between creativity, ethics, and personal disclosure, contributing to a deeper understanding of the impact of art on identity, society, and cultural memory.
Panelists include:
Navin Sam Regi, a multimedia journalist, entrepreneur and academic. Navin focuses on longform documentary projects utilising participatory media like audio narratives and documentary photography. Navin is currently an academic at the University of Queensland and the founder of Talking Stories, a Brisbane based business empowering people and groups to record their life stories and historical narratives. His documentary work spans various collaborations and personal endeavours, having explored themes around grief and death. Navin is currently working on a project with the National Library of Australia and is about to start another long-term project.
Louis Lim, a first-generation Australian currently based in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia. His practice delves into the diverse facets of human experiences, particularly highlighting those often overlooked by mainstream media. This manifests through visual storytelling, conceptual photographic portraits, and artist book making as his primary mediums. Louis’s work has been exhibited in numerous Australian galleries and international exhibitions. Through this venture, he provides a supportive platform for artists to realize their visions through high-quality printing, while also facilitating art projects and events that engage with the local community.
Roger Kalaban, with over 15 years of experience, brothers ROJ and Ralph have dedicated their lives to the art of breaking. Starting their journey on the same day, they have cultivated a profound passion for hip-hop culture, which has driven them to travel extensively across the Middle East and Europe. Their adventures have not only enriched their skills but also deepened their understanding of the global dance community. As seasoned competitors, they have showcased their talent in numerous battles, consistently pushing the boundaries of their craft. Beyond performing, ralph and roj are committed to sports and fitness, actively engaging in teaching and inspiring the youth. They believe in the transformative power of dance and strive to teach creativity and discipline to the next generation.
Rae Choi, a Chinese-Australian AWGIE and SPA nominated filmmaker and writer, based in Magan-djin/Brisbane. Her work has been filmed in Australia, Japan, Italy and France, and has screened and aired internationally. A firm believer that relationships are the project, including the relationship with self, Rae is compelled to make nuanced, culturally specific work through a personally intimate lens. She is currently completing her latest short SOME KIND OF BLUE inspired by her discovery that she is hard-of-hearing.
Moderated by Aleea Monsour, an emerging independent artist and community theatre practitioner from Brisbane, Queensland. She is passionate about the power of theatre and the arts as an agent for change and being able to engage with people from all walks of life. She is personally inspired to engage with the stories of communities and in particular the voices of women and young people in theatre and art. Recently she worked as a co-creator/ co-director on La Boite Theatre companies, The Time is Now and The Neighbourhood.
For those who are not able to physically attend the sessions, BEMAC Discussions will be live streamed on BEMAC’s Facebook page facebook.com/BEMACpresents
