The HA Club invites the public to enjoy Belly Laughs, its new short- and long-form improv show. Established players Arleigh Delaney, Sue Flower, Jack Hunter, Patti Larsen, Adam MacDonald, Laurie Murphy, and Lucas Panizzi are members of the HA Clubbers improv troupe. They will present long-form games, such as Cocktail Party, Musical Hot Spot, Spoon River, and The Rant.
New-to-improv HA Club students Alonzo Blaisdell, Keith Burgoyne, Michelle Dyke, Asrin Ka, and Eva Snow will present short-form games, such as Multi-word Story, No Questions, and Freeze Tag.
“A mix of established and emerging improv talent keeps things energetic and fun for the improv players and the audience,” says show director and improv player Laurie Murphy, “Creating the made-up-on-the-spot scenes is magical mayhem. Belly Laughs always happen!”
Since learning improv in 1990 for the Canada Winter Games Arts Program, Murphy has stayed true to the singular philosophy, “Yes, and…” But it was her instruction from Charna Halpern in Charlottetown and Chicago, including embracing Halpern’s Truth in Comedy improv manual co-written with Del Close, that sealed her life-long passion for improv.
Murphy has also learned her craft from fellow players and ensembles on PEI and across Canada, and from top instructors, such as Lisa Merchant, Brian Smith, Ralph MacLeod, and Gary Vermier. “For me,” she says, “improv is more than an art. It’s a way to entertain that’s positive, and accessible.”
Belly Laughs is presented at the licensed (patrons 19 years of age and older) wheel-chair accessible theatre space in the Benevolent Irish Society’s Irish Cultural Centre, 582 North River Road, Charlottetown, PEI.
