Percussion instruments meet modular synthesizers – what sounds like monochrome soundscapes on paper turns out to be quite a surprise package on the debut album by Berlin duo Bella Wakame. Their debut single “Toutpartout PT2,” released in 2023, had a rather repetitive feel to it – a bubbling ripple that never quite revealed what was lurking beneath the surface. Their self-titled debut album (Umor-Rex 2025), on the other hand, is full of captivating melodies and wonderful electroacoustic textures that are repeatedly and carefree deconstructed.

Andi Haberl, known as the drummer for The Notwist and most recently for his wonderfully warm, airy solo album as SUN, is responsible for the drums and sensory percussion. Florian Zimmer brings his knack for modular synthesizers to the grooving trio Saroos, among others. Together with Andreas Gerth, he creates expansive soundscapes as Driftmachine. Bella Wakame brings all these qualities together – and fuses them into something very unique.
You can hear subtle influences from Neu!, Can, and the Nippon project World Standard, but the way everything flows together is uniquely fresh. The songs pulsate, relaxed and powerful, with small experimental soundscapes flashing in and out, ultimately merging into swinging song structures.
Bella Wakame will be playing two sets and on their second set they’ll be joined be Andrew Pekler on guitar.
Andrew Pekler works with sampling and synthesis to produce texturally rich and sensually evocative sound compositions. Since 2002 he has released solo and collaborative musical works for labels including Faitiche, Kranky, Shelter Press, and Senufo Editions.
