Each movement of Carl Nielsen's Second Symphony expresses one of the four temperaments: choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic and sanguine. These personality traits were once defined by the Greek physician Hippocrates and inspired many works of art, including a woodcut that Carl Nielsen saw hanging in a Danish pub, which inspired this work.
One could describe Don Quixote as a sanguine melancholic. In 1897, Richard Strauss decided to dedicate a symphonic poem to this literary anti-hero created by Cervantes. With the cello as the main character, Richard Strauss ingeniously translated Don Quixote's adventures into music.
FR ― Aucune œuvre n'incarne mieux le romantisme national norvégien que le Concerto pour piano d'Edvard Grieg. Il a composé cette œuvre à l'âge de 24 ans, pendant de longues vacances dans la campagne norvégienne, juste après la naissance de sa fille unique.
Lorsque Respighi quitta sa ville natale de Bologne pour Rome en 1913, il fut frappé par deux choses : les magnifiques fontaines et les pins en forme de parapluie que l'on pouvait voir partout à l'horizon. Il leur dédia un poème symphonique en quatre mouvements. Le dernier mouvement des Pini di Roma rappelle la gloire passée de l'empire romain. Les techniques d'orchestration magistrales de Respighi - avec des cuivres éclatants et un orgue puissant - font trembler le sol sous les pieds des légions qui avancent.

NL ― Elke beweging van Carl Nielsens Tweede symfonie verklankt een van de vier temperamenten: cholerisch, flegmatisch, melancholisch en sanguinisch. Deze persoonlijkheidstrekken werden ooit gedefinieerd door de Griekse arts Hippocrates en vormden de inspiratie voor heel wat kunstwerken. Zo ook voor een houtsnede die Carl Nielsen in een Deense kroeg zag hangen en de aanleiding vormde voor diens Tweede symfonie.
Een sanguine melancholieker, zo zou men Don Quichot kunnen omschrijven. In 1897 besloot Richard Strauss een symfonisch gedicht te wijden aan deze door Cervantes bedachte literaire antiheld. Met de cello als hoofdpersonage vertaalt Richard Strauss op geniale wijze de avonturen van Don Quichot in muziek.
