Biomedicine as well as complementary medicine are all bound by an underlying philosophy or social/cultural meme, deduction analysing, looking for causes as well as solutions we want to fix. The trouble is what we are trying to fix is not the real issue.
Our Western culture and increasingly worldwide, the goal, our need is to ‘get to the point’, solve it by applying whichever skill we have learned. We learn by gathering information from external sources, we learn stuff, often useful. However, mostly we miss the real underlying distress of the patient. The patient is in the same situation, they have a distress, which may be named or not. Identifying and naming the ‘disease’. This gives both practitioner and patient a goal or ’theme’ and is comforting to know.
While this approach works well for infections and acute communicable diseases, it misses the patient and their understanding of their process. Chronic diseases are patterns deeply imbedded in our embodiment and present each day in some place suppressed by the patient (and the practitioner).
My work on Nothingness has shown me a different, less information driven approach to diagnosis and treatment; Inductive reasoning. Treat the complex of this being, the patient, their beliefs, their relationships and their social/familiar memes and engage in the process of unknowing. Trust life, support life and all its manifestations. Is disease a ‘bad’ thing? No, it’s communicating something. It is an unknown story to be uncovered.
