Widely assumed to date from the middle of the fourteenth century before lavish renovations by Humphrey Stafford, Duke Of Buckingham a hundred years later, Newport Castle has an eventful and often misunderstood history. In modern times it has been a tannery, brewery and nail factory and is now closed to the public but ongoing research undertaken by Cadw has revealed it to be older than previously thought, its monumental surviving buildings serving more ambitious purposes than just defending a river crossing and its town.
Will Davies is an Inspector of Ancient Monuments with Cadw and from Newport, and will talk about the findings of his research and fieldwork on the castle over the last 15 years. This covers its history and archaeology from the first castle of the Norman Conquest on Stow hill to the move to the river bank and a remarkable Thirteenth Century feat of engineering, later industrial use, rescue from demolition and conservation by the Ministry of Works in the 1920s. Oliver Blackmore, Collections and Engagement Officer, Newport Museums and Heritage Service will also be on hand to answer any questions.
Although this is not a strenuous tour please be aware that it is 75mins in length without seating. This is suitable for 16 years +. We recommend wearing weather appropriate clothing as it can be very cold within the grounds of the castle, and closed toe shoes. Tours take place at 11am and 2pm. Please reserve a ticket for the time slot that you require via Eventbrite.
If a cancellation is made more than 48hours before the scheduled tour time, the individual will receive a full refund (minus Eventbrite fess). Cancellations made after this time will not receive a refund. For more information please contact: [email protected]
