About the Photographers

Donna Ferrato is an internationally acclaimed photographer renowned for her groundbreaking documentation of domestic violence. Her seminal book, "Living With the Enemy" (Aperture, 1991), sparked a national discourse on sexual violence and women’s rights. In 2014, Ferrato launched the "I Am Unbeatable" campaign to expose and prevent domestic violence through real stories. Ferrato's work has been featured in major news publications and exhibited in over 500 solo exhibitions worldwide. She has held leadership roles in organizations such as the W. Eugene Smith Fund and founded the non-profit Domestic Abuse Awareness Project. Ferrato has received numerous accolades, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant and the Robert F. Kennedy Award. Recognized for her advocacy, Ferrato has been honored by the City of New York and the New York State Supreme Court for her contributions to gender equality. In 2020, she was named one of the Hundred Heroines by the British Arts foundation.

Bronx-born Lisa Leone, renowned for her fusion of sound and motion in photography and cinema, began her career capturing musicians like Moby, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell, alongside notable personalities such as Debi Mazar and Spike Lee. She transitioned into cinematography after a director requested her to shoot B-roll during a music video shoot, sparking her career in filmmaking. Leone's journey led her to collaborate on Stanley Kubrick's final film, "Eyes Wide Shut," where she immersed herself in various aspects of filmmaking under Kubrick's mentorship. Following Kubrick's passing, she delved deeper into the relationship between cinema and imagery. Continuing her cinematography work, Leone's debut film "Exactly," which she wrote, directed, and shot, premiered at prestigious festivals like The Tribeca Film Festival, Sundance, and the London Film Festival. Leone continues to work as a director and in arts programming through YoungArts; her latest personal endeavor involves an ongoing series exploring the raw beauty, sensuality and essence of women.

British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City’s streets for over 25 years. His work, featured in esteemed publications like The Guardian and The New York Review of Books, captures major public figures and historical events, notably the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. His images from the pandemic lockdown in New York City have been acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, showcasing the city's resilience in challenging times. Penman's signature street photography has been exhibited internationally, from Leica galleries in New York to exhibitions in Venice, Berlin, and Sydney.
