Hook, Line, and Afterglow: Writing Unforgettable Beginnings and Endings

Ever had a reader say, “I meant to read one page… and then suddenly it was 2 a.m.”? That’s the power of a great beginning and ending—and exactly what this workshop is about.

In this workshop we’ll dig into how to:

• Launch your stories and novels with openings that grab the reader by the lapels (gently, mostly)
• Land your endings so they feel inevitable, satisfying, and just a little bit haunting (without resorting to “and then I woke up”)
• Create that mysterious aftertaste that makes readers think about your work days later… and maybe even recommend it to a friend.

We’ll look at punchy first lines, slow-burn openings, twist endings, quiet fadeouts, and those rare last paragraphs that make you want to flip straight back to page one. Along the way we’ll steal shamelessly from some famous (and not so famous) examples (purely for educational purposes, of course) and unpack what actually makes them work.

Participants can bring along the beginning or ending of one of their own stories to be workshopped:

You’ll leave with concrete strategies, markedup pages, and at least one opening line and one ending that you’re excited to inflict on an unsuspecting readership.

Bring: a draft (or idea) for a story or novel, a pen, and a willingness to M**der your original first paragraph.
