This is a FREE event, and is also offered in Spanish. This event is located in Central MA, and will repeat in Western MA on May 19. Light refreshments will be provided, but you are asked to bring your own lunch.
Unlock the mysteries of soil chemistry in our Chemical Harmony Workshop. About Farming is Life:
Farming is Life is a family farm in North Central Massachusetts that does not use chemicals and plastics to aid in the production of vegetables for our communities. We follow regenerative farming practices with the goal of minimizing off farm inputs. We do this in part by using trees from our forests to build mulch for compost, using manure from cows that are fed chemical free hay from our farm to add nutrients and harnessing biology to create the balance needed for healthy soil, happy beneficial bugs and bountiful harvests. This is all done with a holistic approach to the farm as a self-contained ecosystem that aims to work with nature not against it.
About the Instructors:
Rubén Parilla (he/him) is the Soil Technical Coordinator for NOFA/Mass and trained in microscopic soil microbial identification through the Soil Food Web School. He is a Certified Lab Tech and studied Environmental Design at the University of Puerto Rico. Rubén has 15 years’ experience working at different capacities in the environmental laboratory industry. He has been performing soil carbon proxy testing, soil health assessments, soil chemical analysis, and soil microbiological evaluations for NOFA/Mass over the past year and has extensive experience farming and working with farmers, including beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers. Rubén performs soil health-related outreach and education events for NOFA/Mass by leading monthly farmer learning calls, providing hands-on workshops and instruction at soil health education events, and networking with farmers and individuals in the agricultural industry. He is a fluent and native Spanish speaker and fully English/Spanish bilingual.

Sobre nosotres:
Jody Mendoza y Richy Peña: Antes de la pandemia, Richy Peña, un productor musical ganador de un premio Grammy, tenía un estudio de grabación en Miami y trabajaba con celebridades internacionales a través de importantes sellos discográficos. Jody Mendoza era propietaria de un club nocturno en el área de Boston y trabajaba en la recién legalizada industria del cannabis para abrir una dispensa minorista recreativa. Al igual que muchas familias, la pandemia trajo consigo una pausa forzada y una reevaluación de valores. Decidieron que era hora de marcar la diferencia y hacer algo positivo para ayudar realmente a nuestras comunidades, no solo entretenerlas.
Cuando surgió la oportunidad de comprar una granja, aprovecharon la ocasión para hacer realidad un sueño de toda la vida. Ahora, Richy y Jody trabajan para identificar y desarrollar prácticas transferibles que los agricultores puedan utilizar para hacer que la agricultura sea más manejable. Además de todo el trabajo agrícola esperado, Richy también trabaja con inteligencia artificial y otras tecnologías para ayudar a automatizar tareas agrícolas tediosas y difíciles, como el riego. También está construyendo un asistente agrícola para registrar y analizar insumos, prácticas utilizadas y observaciones. Jody está experimentando con técnicas regenerativas y biodinámicas con una variedad de cultivos cultivados a partir de semillas certificadas orgánicas para determinar cuáles funcionan mejor en esta región. También está utilizando su experiencia empresarial para analizar la economía de la agricultura e identificar los puntos críticos que impiden que más personas ingresen al campo y operen una granja con éxito.
Sobre les instructores:
Rubén Parilla (pronombre: él) es el Coordinador Técnico de Suelo de NOFA/Mass y ha recibido formación en identificación microbiana del suelo con microscopio en la Soil Food Web School(Escuela de la Red de Comida del Suelo por su nombre en Inglés). Además, tiene amplia experiencia como agricultor y formador en agricultura y también ha trabajado con agricultores, incluyendo agricultores principiantes y/o de grupos socialmente desfavorecidos. Rubén realiza divulgación de temas relacionados con la salud del suelo y eventos educativos para NOFA/Mass, donde lidera llamadas mensuales al aprendizaje para agricultores, provee talleres prácticos y enseñanza sobre la salud del suelo y también crea redes con agricultores y otras personas relacionadas con la industria agrícola. Es hablante nativo de español y bilingüe en español e inglés.
