What better way to use up a pile of scraps than to make a jar full of whimsical flowers? Join Deborah Garner in a beginner-level class in collage appliqué and free-motion quilting. Don’t be intimidated by the process. It’s like doodling with thread and fabric! We will free-cut flower petals out of scraps and create your unique piece in a relaxed and creative environment. You will need a sewing machine with the ability to drop the feed dogs and a darning or free-motion foot. Don’t forget to insert a new, sharp needle. Bring along a spare needle also. Regular cotton thread will be used. It is strongly suggested that you have a pair of micro serrated scissors for cutting. The micro serrated blades give a sharp edge that prevents fraying fabric. Feel free to bring along your own fabric scraps if you want a specific color such as a blue Ball jar or your favorite color. (Largest pieces needed are just slightly bigger than your hand.) If you don't have fabric you want to use, not to worry; we have plenty to share!
We will start by preparing the background layer and the jar, vase, or other vessel of your choice.
Next, you will cut flowers and stems and plan the design of the collage. Various methods of securing pieces of the collage to the background will be demonstrated.
Once all the pieces are prepared and adhered, free motion thread sketching will be demonstrated. Deborah will guide you through practicing the technique on scrap fabric before working directly on the collage.
Finally, a variety of finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Collage techniques of all types will be shared. Examples of upcoming collage class projects will be on display.
*Note: The sewing could be done by hand stitching, but it will take much longer than the allotted class time and will give a different look.
