Raqs Sharqi, better known as Belly Dance in the west, is an ancient old dance art that comes from the cradle of civilization. It has been exploited, appropriated, defamed and bastardized but the passion so many have for the traditional "Arabic" dance has allowed it to survive in it's characteristic mystifying beauty and eastern essence. The pan arab foundational vocabulary and cultural gestures and expressions are very easy to learn if deconstructed and presented with all of the modifications and progressions and the cultural implications are explained. This class will provide all of that and more. The "more" includes increased self-confidence, physical activity, release of tension and pure simple fun! If this is something you've always wanted to do but were to intimidated or didn't have the opportunity to study with a highly qualified instructor that happens to be of the culture, here is your chance. Attire: Dress comfortably in dance/fitness leggings and stretch type fitness top or dance leotard that allow you to move freely.
Footwear: Barefoot, half-sole dance sandal, ballet shoe, soft sole jazz shoe, etc. (whatever your comfortable in but no hard soles on dance floor.)
Accessories: Hip Scarf, Hip Belt or Sarong are all appropriate.
