Class #1

Saturday, 9/28 from 3-5:30pm

Introduction to mark making and the use of line as a visual language

After this class you will have a better understanding of how lines create visual language and how lines express images. The narrative that lines make will be better understood by the student so that when they are looking at drawings they can understand why an artist chooses to use one line over another to depict their objective of the drawing.

Instruction topics: A quick overview on the history of mark making and the history of line as an element of visual language. Visual materials include cave drawings from Blombos, Lascaux and Altamira followed by a demo of drawing different kinds of lines, shapes, marks, etc and having an interactive discussion about how the differences in line can be interpreted and perceived, demonstrating how gestural line drawing is a visual starting point for drawing the figure as a whole.

The class includes a mix of :30 gestural drawings, :60, 5 min, 10 min poses and a final 20 min pose.

Class #2

Saturday, 10/5 from 3-5:30pm

Parts and Motions of the Upper Body

After this class you will be able to draw the upper body by breaking it down into manageable components. This class gives a better understanding of how the upper body moves and how the arms/upper body can have more autonomy in comparison to the lower body.

Instruction Topics: A breakdown of the shapes and forms that make up the different parts of the upper body i.e arms, hands, neck, shoulders, etc. Visual materials include a drawn diagram of the upper body with very basic muscular system anatomy information followed by a demo of drawing the visual relationship between the parts of the upper body i.e the range of motions of the arms and how that relates to the shoulders connection to the torso. There will be an emphasis on visually understanding the shapes and forms that make up the ribcage and pelvis and how they interact with each other.

The class includes a mix of :30 gestural drawings, :60, 5 min, 10 min poses and a final 20 min pose.

Class #3

Saturday, 10/19 from 3-5:30pm

Parts and Motions of the Lower Body

After this class you will be able to draw the lower body by breaking it into manageable components. The student will also learn how the lower body moves and its relationship to how the figure interacts within a setting(i.e the lower body when standing/sitting/kneeling)

Instruction topics: A breakdown of the shapes and forms that make up the parts of the lower body i.e legs, feet, hips, etc. Visual materials include a drawn diagram of the lower body with very basic muscular system anatomy information followed by a demo of drawing the visual relationship between the parts of the lower body i.e the range of motions of the legs and how that relates to the hip placement in the pelvis. There will be an emphasis on visually understanding the shapes and forms that make up the pelvis and how it functions within the lower body parts. There will also be a small but important lesson on how the relationship of the feet on the ground in standing poses defines gravity and weight.

The class includes a mix of :30 gestural drawings, :60, 5 min, 10 min poses and a final 20 min pose.

Class #4

Saturday, 10/26 from 3-5:30pm

Full Body Focus

After this class you will be able to draw the entire figure with a basic understanding of all its different parts and begin the process of drawing the figure within settings and environments.

Instruction topics: Utilizing all the information of the previous classes, the human figure can now be represented and perceived as a system of shapes and forms interacting together. Visual materials include preliminary drawings of famous representational figure paintings followed by a demo of drawing figures within a designated space or “setting”. There will be an emphasis on the concept of proportions and foreshortening as drawing elements in accurately depicting the body in perspective.

The class includes a mix of :30 gestural drawings, :60, 5 min, 10 min poses and a final 20 min pose.
