Beekeeping: How to prepare and wrap up beehives for Winter
About this Event
This is a local and custom program for beekeepers in Southern Ontario who want to witness and learn how to prepare and wrap their bees for winter.
Location: 237 Concession 4 W, Waterdown, ON
This program is based on Daniel's experience which is a combination of recommendations from the Ontario Beekeeping Manuals, knowledge passed down from Master Beekeepers, tips from local breeders and online references for Southern Ontario. This field trip is available to the existing students and the general public who want to learn and see others prepare for winter beekeeping.
When you arrive, please park at the gravel pad behind the white barn. The host, Daniel Kneblewski, will gather all students and begin the workshop at 10 AM.
What to expect:
- Go over the winter checklist from Daniel's class 4 of 4.
- Learn how and what equipment, such as bottom boards, entrance reducers, and inner covers should be installed.
- Learn how to apply OA dribble
- Understand the importance of sealing boxes and breaking the propolis seal
- Providing emergency feeding and installation
- Understanding the difference between ventilated hives and condesation hives
- Learn how we apply the Wellington Wraps and Hive Hugger systems
In order to attend this field trip class, you must provide your own bee suit. Limited suits (6) are available to rent. It is recommended that you bring gloves, boots or shoes above your ankles. Bring your camera/phone to take photos! Avoid dark, red and black clothing.
If you are allergic to bees, you must contact the host prior to attending.
Other winter wrap systems are not taught in this workshop. The Wellington Wraps and Hive Hugger winter wrap systems are applied in this event.
