Learn How to Play the Gong – 6 Hour Workshop
Workshop Intention:
To introduce participants to the art of gong playing through hands-on practice, guided listening, and energetic awareness, culminating in the ability to create simple gong soundscapes for personal practice or group healing.
Hour 1 – Introduction & Foundations
Welcome & Opening Circle: Set intentions, introductions, brief sharing.
History & Origins: Cultural, spiritual, and therapeutic uses of the gong.
Types of Gongs: Symphonic, planetary, wind gongs, etc. Differences in tone and purpose.
Sacred Approach: Respecting the gong as a living teacher.
Hour 2 – Gong Anatomy & Playing Basics
Parts of the Gong: Rim, center, surface textures.
Mallets & Beaters: Sizes, materials, and effects on sound.
Body Mechanics: Posture, breath awareness, relaxed shoulders/arms.
First Strokes: Gentle strikes, single tones, exploring resonance.
Practice Session: Participants rotate, experiencing different mallets and placements.

Basic Playing Techniques:
Soft rolling
Crescendo/decrescendo
Sweeps and circles
Striking at different zones
Dynamics & Control: How volume and pacing shape the journey.
Hands-On Practice: Guided group exercises in layering sounds.
Hour 4 – Energetics of Gong Playing
Listening Deeply: Noticing harmonics, overtones, and the gong’s voice.
Intuitive Connection: Feeling when to play and when to pause.
