Two years after Theatre Downtown's first show back since the pandemic -- The Crucible -- we present the Birmingham premier of a play inspired by The Crucible -- Becky Nurse of Salem by Sarah Ruhl.
Directed by Sara James, with AD Sawyer Luke, Ruhl tells the story of Becky Nurse, a tour guide in Salem, Massachusetts, who is a descendant of Rebecca Nurse, one of the women executed during the Salem witch trials. Becky, struggling with her family's legacy, job loss, and personal issues, turns to a local witch for help, leading to a series of chaotic and darkly comic events. The play explores themes of family history, female identity, health, addiction, and the lasting impact of historical events on contemporary life.
