Roger LeLievre, author and publisher of the Know Your Ships Field Guide, will share his highly-personal story, to close out National Maritime Day 2024, at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay.
Ship lovers are invited to watch in-person or online, via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/4396951274?omn=89353560394
Accompanied by images and video, Roger's story touches on his childhood summers spent at his grandparent’s cottage along the river at Sault Ste. Marie, how she shipped out on a laker fresh out of high school, his nearly 40-year career in the newspaper business and how he came to be editor and publisher of Know Your Ships. No matter what twists and turn his life has taken, it has always some back to the boats. He touches on what the boats – and the book – have meant to himself and others and how he plans to pass that legacy along to the next generation.
A Q&A session will follow.
Roger LeLievre comes by his interest in Great Lakes ships naturally – he grew up at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, just blocks from the Soo Locks, and remembers watching the boats go by during summers spent at his grandparent’s cottage on the St. Marys River shoreline. He shipped out on a Great Lakes freighter as soon as he turned 18, but rather than work on the boats, he wound up writing and talking about them instead.
He has been editor and publisher of the annual “Know Your Ships” book since 1995 but has been involved in its publication much longer than that – he was 14 when his first boat picture was published in the 1968 edition.
President of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit for 18 years, he is editor of its monthly publication “The Historian” and was recipient of the group’s Historian of the Year Award in 2006. He is also involved with the non-profit Web site Boatnerd.com, is an associate member of the International Shipmasters’ Association (Port Huron Lodge #2) and is on the Soo Locks Visitor Center Association board of directors.
He has been a guest on many Great Lakes freighters and has also enjoyed several cruises with Holland America Line, Victory Cruise Lines, American Queen Voyages (on the Mississippi River) and St. Lawrence Cruise Lines. His Great Lakes-themed presentations are popular all around the Great Lakes.
