About this Event
BEAUTIFUL DATA
In three sessions we will take a closer look at data visualisation and information design. We will look at the beauty and the possibilities. And how we can make our work with data more effective.
Each session will be a mix of a lecture, exercises or cases and Q&A. We have 30 spots available for each session.
In this edition of BEAUTIFUL DATA the focus is on creating impact.
NOVEMBER 25, 2024 (3:00pm – 5:00pm CET) - JACOPO OTTAVIANI – POWERFUL TOOLS FOR SOCIAL GOOD
This session explores how data can be leveraged to create societal impact and support sustainable development goals, with a focus on international cooperation and transnational projects. Participants will learn to harness data for telling compelling stories and driving meaningful change, utilising techniques from data journalism and digital cartography. Through real-world examples, such as The Migrants’ Files, Lungs of the Earth and Map Makoko, attendees will gain practical skills in transforming raw data into powerful tools for social good. The session aims to equip participants with innovative approaches to utilise data effectively in global contexts, contributing to positive societal change and sustainable development across borders.
BIO: Jacopo Ottaviani is a computer scientist who works as Code for Africa’s Senior Strategist. As an ICFJ Knight Fellow in 2016-2019, Jacopo built teams and programmes supported by the World Bank, Google News Initiative, GIZ and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His mix of technical skills, as a computer scientist and data journalist, has resulted in a series of projects published by, among others, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, El País and Internazionale. He worked on multiple projects supported by the Pulitzer Center and the European Journalism Center. He is a member of the European Press Prize preparatory committee and works as a trainer with BBC Media Action.
DECEMBER 2, 2024 (3:00PM – 5:00PM CET) – SKYE MORET - COMMUNICATING CONCEPTS CLEARLY, VISUALLY, BEAUTIFULLY
This session will explore how to create data-driven graphics that conceptually support your data and insights. In our modern era of data deluge, conceptual understanding of data insights, their arguments, and contextual cues within data visualisations are needed now more than ever. Within a data-saturated narrative we want to share, how do we zoom out to key concepts and visually communicate those to an audience? How do we use aesthetics to promote an information consumer's rational or emotional sense of trust? Lasting and impactful graphics take on many forms, but they all share something in common: their visual form reflects a hierarchy of meaning. Together, we'll examine how these forms come together to create beautiful, data-driven graphics that also clearly convey the 'big picture.'
BIO: Skye Morét is a data-driven designer and researcher. She has led client-based visualisation projects ranging from habitat-specific climate change to workplace cancer risk and led a collaborative design graduate program for the last three years. Skye's data visualisations have been exhibited at Science Gallery Dublin and the European Parliament Building in Brussels, among other venues. She has sailed 100,000+ km around the globe, which fuels her abiding interest in the power of art and design to engage people with nature and science.
DECEMBER 9, 2024 (3:00PM – 5:00PM CET) – REBECCA CONROY - THE POWER OF WELL UNDERSTOOD DATA
There is a real sense of fulfilment in seeing decisions made, lives saved, or resources wisely allocated because of the power of well understood data. In this session, you'll learn, through examples and exercises, how to create impactful data visualizations that drive real-world outcomes.
BIO: Rebecca Conroy is co-founder of the award-winning data visualization studio, Beyond Words. The studio is based in London and works with global brands to take complex data and transform it into impactful visuals and experiences. Rebecca trained as a journalist and began her career at the BBC where she launched and ran several of their landmark digital products.
