Beaumont Tower, Carillon Concert

Join MSURA colleagues and friends for a carillon concert on the MSU Campus on July 8. We will be joined by MSU College of Music Carillonist Jonathan (Jon) Lehrer. Jon is directing the series at MSU and is a laureate of international competitions for carillon. He will talk a bit about the history of the MSU carillon, carillon music, and answer questions.

Plan to arrive by 5:15 pm (the concert begins at 6:00 pm and lasts about one hour). Bring your own chair or blanket. You can find the MSU group on the north side of the Carillon. Look for the green and white balloons.

The program for the evening features guest carillonist Jeremy Chesman who will present a genre-spanning program blending classical works, jazz standards, contemporary pieces, and musical theater favorites.

Brief History

The MSU carillon contains 49 bells with the first ten bells being installed in the new Beaumont Tower in 1928. Thirteen additional bells were installed in 1935. The smallest bell weighs about 15 pounds; the largest weighs 2.5 tons. The interior of the tower was completely renovated in 1996 and the carillon, clock, and Westminster chimes were restored. This summer marks the 30th Anniversary of this restoration.

Check out the 2026 Muelder Carillon Concert Series at: Events | Michigan State University College of Music. Concerts are free and begin at 6 pm on Wednesdays during July and early August. Tours of the carillon are generally available after the concert, as well.
