POPPA SOUL has over 40 years in live music and entertainment. Initially as a drummer in multiple Wellington bands across different genres, he has always explored new directions and opportunities for creativity. His passion for great music led to a natural transition into the DJ scene which began after a move to the Cook Islands in 2014. A few years later returning to resettle with whanau on the Tutukaka coast. Poppa Soul is well known locally for his stonkin’ fat tunes and other creative music events. He has also had a few years with the Beagle Radio DJ team and lately been exploring hybrid studio music and sound production.
“As a DJ I’m always looking for new ideas and tunes to share that resonates with the human soul and lived experience! That’s what drives my passion for music and people”
KIRSTY HARGREAVES: Kirsty has forged her name in the Auckland music scene since 1997. Starting out in darkened
clubs, and having played alongside the originators of the Auckland DJ circuit, whom she fondly
refers to as “my heros and teachers”. She was first invited to become a resident DJ at Dragon Bar
at 19 years old, “and that's where it all started”.
Coming from a musical family and a long line of big band jazz players, Kirsty's dj sound spans an
array of jazz, space disco, funk, soul and house. She has played the Auckland clubs consistantly
through the decades and travelled the country to appear in spaces dedicated to the preservation
of dance music in Aotearoa. She has lent her soulful side to local radio stations and bars, and
her longstanding love for house music to the clubs.
Having built up a stronghold of a record collection from a young age by digging through crates
upon crates in the record stores and fairs, she has one of the largest, well rounded music
collections in N.Z. One of the curators of the infamous Golden Dawn parties "Dirty, Stanky,
Funky" and fondly known as the "First Lady of the NZ Soul All Dayer", Kirsty has her feet firmly
planted in both the funk scene and the underground house groups and can be seen playing in
either environment where she adapts and her versatility allows her to thrive on either platform,
even becoming a fully fledged festival kid, she is now a well loved part of the management team
of AUM NYE FESTIVAL. A promoter in her own right, Kirsty has produced events to keep the
dancefloor moving such as: “The Message”, Black Magic Woman”, Incognito, Metrophonics,
Disco Disco and TRAX 'R' US.
Kirsty is a mainstay and integral part of dance music culture in Aotearoa. Her discerning ear, love
for music and personable attitude as seen her remain in the forefront of clubbing in NZ. Living
by the tradition: “Respect those who have set the scene and teach those who have “the bite”
and long to see it continue to evolve”
“I love the people I work with, there is nothing better than sharing smiles and styles
and having a laugh and a dance and looking forward to the next time you get to do
so”
