Cripple Creek Backcountry is hosting our annual Beacon Bash Saturday, October 12th from 9am - 1pm in Woodland Park at Picnic Shelter 6 (near the lawn bowling). This event is for backcountry goers to meet, refresh beacon skills, learn about updating their beacons, practice with new beacons, check out safety equipment like airbags and raise money for NWAC.Our goal is to provide backcountry goers to refresh their avalanche skills on dry land before the season ramps up. Participants are encourage to bring their avalanche backpacks and safety gear to practice with it before heading into the backcountry this season. Don't forget to invite your touring partners!!
Event Schedule at Woodland Park:
Vendor Village Coffee & Pastries by Cafe Ladro: 9-10 am
9 am: Morning Yoga and Pre-Touring Stretching for the Backcountry
Prepare for your uphill ascents with a dynamic class centered on balance, stretching, and breathing techniques inspired by yoga, Pilates, plyometrics, and dance. This class is designed for the car or trailhead, so feel free to bring your ski poles if you’d like!
Led by Lauren Slater, E-RYT 500 and Certified Classical Pilates Instructor, whose extensive expertise in body physiology and injury prevention will guide you in maintaining health and staying injury-free.
Lauren’s passions are the mountains, splitboarding, and helping people stay healthy and active at every stage of life. She’s the one you’ll spot doing crab walks with a TheraBand around the car during beacon checks, and she loves sharing her 20+ years of expertise as a (self-proclaimed) professional in recovery techniques.
Guided Clinics: 9:30-11:30am
Avalanche Companion Rescue Practice Morning Session: 9am-10am.
With assistance from local guide services, newer members of the community can learn how to do a single burial avalanche companion rescue drill.

Multiple Beacon Rescue Practice: 9:30am - 10:30am
Set up 2 beacon stations. 15 min overview on the BCA beacons and how to identify multiple burials. Practice functions and finding beacons. Practice working in teams of 2-3 people.

Avalanche Companion Rescue Refresher: 10:30am-11:30pm.
Create a team of 3 with your friends and practice avalanche rescue skills in complex scenarios! Teams will compete head-head sharing the role of doing avalanche rescue with members of their team.

Tour Planning and Use of Modern Navigation Tools Session: 10:30-11:30pm.
With assistance from local guide services, newer members of the community can learn how to use modern navigation tools, as well as local guidebooks and terrain atlases (provided by the vendors) to plan an effective tour that accounts for concerns with avalanche risk management.

Beacon Interference Demonstations with the BD Crew and Mike Hattrup
Join beacon activities for in depth learning on how 3 antenna beacons work. Detailing things that interfere with beacon signals, how the signal is formed, and differences in signal strength across different beacons.

Stop by the BCA tent to see the latest and greatest in airbag packs. We strongly recommend practicing your beacon skills with a pack on your back, just like you would in the backcountry.

-Bongos is a easy walk or 2 minute drive from the venue. The carribean food and atmosphere is top notch for everyone grabbing a bit to eat and hanging out after the event.
