Beach Rock Mosaics with Rin Abel

July 21st | 9am - Noon | Golden Garden Beach

Join Artist Rin Abel on July 21 to turn Golden Garden Beach into a beach art mosaic masterpiece. In this collaborative art experience, we’ll work with Mother Nature to turn our beach canvas into something completely new. The scope of our masterpiece will be determined by the size and creativity of our group -- perhaps we’ll create an octopus, a breaching orca, wild horses or a quirky mermaid.

We’ll start the day by combing the beach -- collecting rocks of various colors, shapes and sizes. Then we’ll outline our mural design in the sand and slowly begin to fill in the details with the treasures we found on the beach: rocks, driftwood, shells and maybe even a little seaweed.

After a day of well-spent creativity, we’ll take photos and allow the tides reclaim the beach and our art. If we build our masterpiece above the high tide line, we will return the rocks to the sea by hand before we leave (We Believe in Leaving No Trace).

This is the third Beach Mosaic Class that Rin has taught and they just keep getting better and better. The idea for this collaborative art project was born from the beach art activity at the Kula Abundance Tour. Last July, attendees created all sorts of beautiful scenes in the sand but one stood out -- Rin Abel’s nearly life size mosaic horse made from colored rocks, and seaweed. Rin will be leading this art experience.

About Your Instructor: Rin Abel

Rin lives in Portland, Oregon and pays the bills with full-time work as a veterinary technician. She is hoping to eventually change careers and work entirely in the outdoors industry. She was born in Florida and has mostly lived on the East Coast, but relocated to Oregon following her 2020 Pacific Crest Trail thru hike.

The transformative experience of 4.5 months on trail refocused Rin’s artwork from primarily commissioned pet portraits to soft, sky dominated watercolor and gouache landscapes. She still enjoys highly detailed graphite pencil sketching, though, and draws in her sketchbook daily. Rin loves the process of creating art in general and is also inclined to make spur-of-the-moment creative pieces with sidewalk chalk, torn paper, rocks, and other found materials, just for the joy of making something. She finds making art in all forms to be a meditative experience.

An avid hiker, backpacker, rock climber, equestrian, and kayaker, Rin has truly found her place in the Pacific Northwest. No matter the weather, she spends every bit of her free time finding beautiful places to take in the natural beauty of our forests, mountains, deserts, and beaches.
