Collaboration between environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage and local artist Emma Christopherson.Tuesday 17th September 6-8pm
Saturday 21st September 2-4pm
Join Brighton-based seascape painter Emma Christopherson and Surfers Against Sewage regional rep Daisy for a relaxed community beach clean followed by a mindful art workshop incorporating beach-found plastics and painting.
We’ll be meeting by the boats outside the Brighton Fishing Museum and Fishing Quarter Gallery on Brighton seafront, before we disperse onto the beach to intercept litter from reaching the sea. We’ll then come back to the Fishing Quarter Gallery to transform pieces of beach-found plastics into works of art, giving them a new lease of life and raising awareness of ocean plastic pollution. The workshop will be held amongst Emma’s latest seascape exhibition, and Emma will be on hand to guide you through techniques for painting the sea. There’ll also be the opportunity to contribute to a large community collaboration painting, and exhibit your own beach plastic artwork in the gallery for the remainder of the exhibition if you would like to.
‘Pause’ is an exhibition of calming seascapes, capturing waves caught in a moment of time. The paintings draw your attention to beautiful seaside details that can be easy to miss, but that can bring a sense of calm and gratitude when we remind ourselves to slow down and notice them. Exhibition is open 16th-22nd September - more information can be found at www.emmachristophersonart.co.uk.
Being on the beach can be a very mindful experience, and we need to protect this environment from the rising tide of plastic pollution - for our continued enjoyment of our coastline, for the wellbeing of marine creatures and for the health of our planet. Getting involved in beach cleans is a perfect way to mindfully spend time on the beach connecting with nature and the community, while also doing your bit to protect it for future generations. All materials will be provided (first come first served), including gloves and bags for the beach clean (feel free to bring a litter picker if you have one, but this is not essential).
Beach clean is FREE to join.
Art workshop - £5 per person (to help cover cost of art materials) - you can pay by cash or card on the day.
Unlimited spaces for the beach clean, but spaces for the workshop will be first come first served on the day.
