About this Event
Girl Scouts and the community are invited to Girl Scout DreamLab in Denver to participate in the NEW Children's Diabetes Foundation Patch Program: Be a Diabetes Detective: Exploring Health, Friendship, and Confidence
Empower Yourself with Diabetes Knowledge and Support!
Dive into the world of diabetes education and advocacy with the Children's Diabetes Foundation in this hands-on event, designed to teach youth about the science of diabetes and how they can support friends with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
- Taste Girl Scout cookies and learn how blood sugar levels change in real time using a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM).
- Gain insight into the daily experiences of someone living with T1D.
- Discover how exercise impacts blood sugar levels.
- Connect with individuals living with T1D throughout the event.
Older Girl Scouts will explore the mental health challenges of managing T1D, including diabetes burnout, anxiety, and eating disorders, while learning supportive friendship skills.
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in optional diabetes screenings, providing valuable insights into their health and raising awareness about diabetes risk factors.
For those Girl Scouts in grades 9-12 interested in science and healthcare, we're gauging interest in a unique opportunity to shadow lab professionals at the Barbara Davis Center, where attendees can witness impactful work firsthand.
This event is an empowering blend of diabetes education, science, empathy, and support—join us to learn, share, and make a difference!
This event is open to everyone in the community. We will NOT be checking tickets or turning anyone away. Activities are open-house style and will be running for the full 10a.m.-12p.m. time frame. By completing all stations and the handout during the event, attendees will earn the Children's Diabetes Foundation patch. You do NOT need to arrive at 10a.m. to complete this program. Generally, the activities take 45 minutes - 1 hour to complete. This community event is open to kids of all ages, but geared towards those in K-12th grade.
If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Erin Cook at [email protected] or Breann Grell at [email protected].
This is not a drop-off event. All children must be accompanied by a parent, caregiver, or troop leader. Tickets are just for RSVP purposes to ensure we have enough supplies.
