What are batá drums?
Cuban Batá drums are three hourglass-shapes drums, brought to Cuba by way of the African Diaspora, and played with hands in a call-and-response manner. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, the drums became more widespread in Cuban secular culture by their adoption in Cuban folkloric, then popular, music.
Today, Cuban batá drumming can be found on virtually every continent on Earth and the rhythms have been adapted to congas and drum set.
