Drop Ship ‘The Money Pit’
En Route to Butte Hold, Periphery Space
20 January 3027
Months of relaxing resupply and refit following the events on Iron Land are coming to a head. The Affordable Atrocities Mercenary Company is headed to Butte Hold, home of the infamous pirate Redjack Ryan.
The recovery and decoding of the McGuffin, which turned out to be a beacon to an SLDF cache on Butte Hold, is the key to the Mercenary Company’s latest adventure. The Commonwealth Mining Company is willing to pay handsomely for the chance to get its hands on some LosTech. But, it was not a direct jump from Iron Land to Butte Hold.
First, the Mercenaries and their CMC liaisons swung by the planet of Steelton to catch up on news around the Inner Sphere and inform their Lyran benefactors that the Bloody Hands Pirates were cleared out. It was also a chance to restock needed supplies and give the MechWarriors and AsTechs some even more needed downtime after the harrowing Iron Land campaign.
As it turns out, ole Major Stern was not booted from his position as commander of the Steelton militia. While he was ultimately pleased with hearing that Bloody Hands Pirates were done, he seemed suspicious of the association with CMC and gravely concerned over Affordable Atrocities traveling to Butte Hold. Taking on Redjack Ryan and his group of pirates calling themselves “Ryan’s Rebels” is a whole different can of worms.
Of course, the Mercenaries did not share the discovery of the beacon leading to an SLDF cache with Stern or the Steelton Militia. Or the fact that Ryan was the one who sent the Bloody Hands Pirates looking for the beacon on Iron Land. The fewer people that know about it, the better. Right?
So, a little bit of breathing room was granted but not a large amount. Redjack Ryan surely can’t do anything without the beacon. However, the secret will slip out eventually and the Lyrans or someone else will get involved. Or Ryan’s sadistic side will take over and he’ll end up raiding poor Lyran border worlds looking for Affordable Atrocities and the beacon. Better off avoiding any confrontations with Inner Sphere powers and taking the fight to Ryan as soon as feasible. There were some suspicious characters lurking around Cregan’s Bluff prior to leaving.
That meant leaving Steelton and heading towards Butte Hold and following the beacon to wherever it leads. Fortunately, there is a resistance group of sorts willing to support Affordable Atrocities while planet side. However, the Money Pit cannot be placed at risk by landing on the planet. Losing the drop ship means no way of getting home. It’ll stay safely tucked away somewhere off planet. So, all ‘Mechs, personnel, and supplies will need to be dropped from orbit on the planet. The Money Pit will extract once whatever is in the SLDF cache is recovered.
So, buckle up Mercenaries. It’s time for step one. A screaming orbital drop onto a harsh, inhospitable planet teeming with pirates and then a mad dash to rendezvous with a resistance group of unknown quantity and quality. Oh, and the lead AsTech, Gary, has insisted he drop on planet with you. What can go wrong?
