Bats are among the most mysterious, misunderstood, and ecologically important mammals. Bats are responsible for over a billion dollars of pest control services in the US, eating an enormous number of insects that damage crops. Come to the Birdhouse this Monday night, June 1, from 7:30 - 9:30 pm, for an introduction to the wild world of bats. We invited Gary McCracken, an emeritus professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UTK, with a 50 year career chasing bats around the world, to share stories and answer all of your questions. Bring your children and Gary will turn them into bats! As night approaches we will go on a bat walk. Using ultrasonic bat detectors, we will listen to and identify our local bats as they emerge from our historic houses and churches for their nightly breakfast of insects.
