Bass Boss: A Film About Dek Bass and DJ Khabir
About this Event
Rana Ghose investigates Dek Bass, a sound system style unique to West Bengal and sets out to meet its elusive leading light DJ Khabir. Overwhelming, aggressive, and prone to virulent fandom in his region, this form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to Jamaican sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khabir.
We've been doubly fortunate to not only house this event at Rhythm and their remarkable sound system, but to also have Toronto based producer Raf Reza perform in a unique manner - we have a "Dek" from West Bengal, a modified cassette deck that is the Dek in Dek Bass. After a Q&A between Ghose and Raf Reza, a demonstration of the deck with cassettes selected by Raf Reza will close out our night.
