Basket Weaving

Join Lucia Alfaro, a fourth-generation basket maker and member of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, for a demonstration of traditional longleaf pine needle basketry. Lucia specializes in “effigy” baskets, animal-shaped designs like turtles, ducks, and hummingbirds, a technique passed down from her grandmother and mother. Blending traditional and contemporary methods, she hand-picks her pine needles and dyes her own raffia to create each signature piece.
Come see this generations-old craft in action and learn how Lucia keeps Coushatta basketry, and the stories woven into it, alive for the next generation.
