Join Coleman Little for an overview of the interesting and complex group we call bees. You'll learn about some of the common and interesting groups of native bees you are likely to come across in Arkansas as well as the broad range of social behaviors that bees exhibit. You'll also learn about the different ways that native bees nest and forage, with some advice on how to promote native bees on your property.
Born and raised in Arkansas. Coleman I is working towards his PhD at the University of Arkansas, where he is studying how land management (roadsides, natural areas, wildlife areas) impacts bee communities in different parts of the state.
While working towards his Master's degree at the University of Central Arkansas, Coleman discovered that there had been little to no research on native bees in Arkansas and therefore made it his goal to better understand these important insects and to educate the public about them. Coleman designed and executed an experiment to analyze the community structure of the native bees at the Jewell Moore Nature Reserve on UCA's campus, comparing it to one of Conway's city parks and the Cherokee Prairie NA near Charleston AR.
Coleman is currently a member of the faculty in UCA's Biology department where he operates a lab. Coleman also works with the AR Natural Heritage Commission, AR Game & Fish Commission, Central Arkansas Water, the Northwest Arkansas Community College, and other organizations to document the bees occurring throughout Arkansas.
