Basic Water Rescuer (BWR)
About this Event
The Basic Water Rescuer (BWR) class is designed for firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who may be expected to take action during floodwater, storm surge, canal, retention pond, flooded roadway, or shallow-water rescue incidents.
Building on the awareness foundation taught in AWR, the BWR course moves responders from simply recognizing water hazards to developing the basic rescue skills needed to operate more confidently and safely around the water. This hands-on training introduces practical rescue concepts such as self-rescue, shallow-water movement, talk/reach/throw techniques, basic victim contact, tethered rescues, team coordination, and the use of rescue equipment in realistic water-rescue situations.
In coastal Florida, water emergencies are not limited to hurricanes. Severe thunderstorms, overwhelmed drainage systems, king tides, storm surge, vehicle accidents near canals, and flooded roadways can quickly place citizens and responders in dangerous conditions. The BWR course helps prepare first responders to recognize when a rescue is possible, when conditions are becoming unsafe, and how to work as part of a coordinated team before a routine incident becomes a responder emergency.
