Basic Stone Carving Workshop

Come to the VA Inst. of Blacksmithing for an introduction to the art of traditional stone carving using hand tools! Students will learn how to handle the three main carving chisels, to make a flat surface and a curved surface, and a little bit of lettering technique. The second half of class, students will carve letters or a design of their own choosing. Students are encouraged to come to class with a sketch of a design they would like to carve.

This is an introduction to lettering and relief carving. Students will learn the skills necessary to follow up with setting up a carving practive at home to carve 3-D sculptures or to attend additional workshops for sculptural carving.

Tools and stone are included. Students will go home with their own carved block of stone.
