Basic Beekeeping Course Weekend ✨New✨
Summer Weekend Basic Beekeeping Course
July 18–19 | 9 AM – 4 PM (classroom)
Saturday evening 6–8 PM — hands-on apiary session (optional)
Yes, these are long days, but we cover a lot of valuable information.
Lunch is on your own (bring food, join a group order, or go out).
For the apiary session, students must sign waivers and bring protective gear (suit, gloves, boots, water). We do have a limited number of suits available for new beekeepers if needed.
---
Basic Beekeeping Topics Include:
- SD and Rapid City regulations (and other states when applicable)
- Honeybee biology, anatomy, and development
- Equipment and hive options
- Pests, diseases, predators, and treatments
- Supplemental feeding and colony management
- Hive inspections and seasonal management
- Queen management and colony dynamics
- Preparing bees for winter
- Africanized honeybees
- Introduction to natural beekeeping
I typically invite additional local beekeepers to share their experiences during each course as well.
This course is taught by Tara Darby. A backyard beekeeper and professional wildlife biologist. An active advisory board member of the Black Hills Area Beekeeping Club, she has a lot of valuable beekeeping knowledge and experiences to share. 🐝❤️
