Hotel Flor was originally the Hotel Floridan when it was built in 1927 before Barron Collier purchased it in 1930 and was the tallest building in Florida for 40 years.
In the early twentieth century, after Barron made his fortune in streetcar advertising in New Year City, he was Florida's largest land owner and Collier County was named after him.
If Barron Collier and Jay Gatsby had crossed paths in the 1920s, their meeting would have been a dazzling collision of ambition and glamour — Collier, the visionary businessman shaping Florida’s future, and Gatsby, the enigmatic dreamer hosting the decade’s most lavish parties, both embodying the era’s intoxicating mix of wealth, vision, and illusion!
