Press & Praise for Barbra Lica
Barbra Lica is a Juno-nominated Canadian singer-songwriter whose voice effortlessly blends jazz, folk and pop. Based in Toronto, she has dazzled audiences from New York’s iconic Birdland to Toronto’s Koerner Hall and major jazz festivals across North America. (barbralicamusic.com)
Drawing on her early years immersed in a musical family and a formal education in jazz-vocal performance, Barbra crafts a stage presence that’s warm, playful and deeply musical. Her live shows combine storytelling, sparkling musicianship and that rare gift of drawing the audience in to a conversation.
Critics have been unanimous in their praise:
- “Lica smiles when she sings. You can hear it. When you see her in concert, you’ll see it too. In a word, refreshing.” – Tim Tamashiro, CBC Radio
- “Barbra Lica’s voice is infectious.” – Greg Wells, music producer
- “With her upbeat lilt and vocal cuteness on covers and originals, Lica offers smiles and sympathy, not blues.” – Brad Wheeler, The Globe and Mail
- “It starts and ends with Lica’s voice. It’s a bright, vibrant contralto one minute, laconic and syrupy the next when she lets a phrase die on the vine and trail off.” – Frank De Blase
Her recorded work reflects a fearless traversal of genres: her debut That’s What I Do (2012) earned her recognition as one of Canada’s Top 5 female jazz singers. Her subsequent albums have woven folk-pop textures into her jazz foundation, making each new release an exploration in both musical and emotional range.
For this solo show, Barbra brings all of those elements to the fore: intimate storytelling, richly crafted songs, and a voice that invites you in, invites you to feel along. She travels across the continent to deliver an evening of warmth, sophistication and genuine connection — and we’re delighted to welcome her to the stage.
