ZOMBIE DOUBLE FEATURE:
Our fundraising double feature starts with something wonderfully peculiar – failed Indian-American exploitation auteur Krishna Shah’s HARD ROCK ZOMBIES – and ends with an under-appreciated cult classic, master of horror John Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS.
DRINK BEER / DO GOOD:
Buy a pint of our special SATANIC PANIC! beer (£2 minimum donation per pour), or some raffle tickets to help raise funds for , East London's HIV and sexual health charity that’s providing better futures for people living with or affected by HIV.
HARD ROCK ZOMBIES dir Krishna Shah (1984 /USA / 98mins)
Heavy Metal was huge in the 1980s, but that also attracted the wrath of moral campaigners who blamed it for the fall of civilisation, championing Satan, and corrupting youth. Bands were even accused of hiding covert messages in their music (a technique known as ‘backmasking’). In Krishna Shah’s goofball arthouse zombie-apocalypse melodic-rock musical-comedy (yes, really!) a touring band booked to perform in a small town are murdered by a clan of horrific mutants, whose patriarch is none other than Hitler! When the band is brought back to life, the stuffy townsfolk are forced to overcome their fear of rock music and embrace the hard rock zombies if they are to survive.
PRINCE OF DARKNESS dir John Carpenter (1987 / USA / 102mins)
Written, co-scored and directed by John Carpenter, PRINCE OF DARKNESS follows a group of quantum physics students who are asked to assist a Catholic priest in investigating an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery, which they come to find is a sentient, liquid embodiment of Satan (or worse…). Starring cult icons Donald Pleasance and Victor Wong, the film also sees Alice Cooper return to BAR TRASH after an earlier appearance in Spanish werewolf movie, MONSTER DOG (1984). Here, ‘The Godfather Of Shock Rock’ appears as a ‘Street Schizo’, a mysterious zombie harbinger of the coming apocalypse.
Polite notice: We are showing PRINCE OF DARKNESS and HARD ROCK ZOMBIES with subtitles from the best available digital sources. HARD ROCK ZOMBIES has been restored in an uncut composite version, sourced from the only known 35mm film elements with video inserts, so please approach the materials with love and empathy.
DOUBLE FEATURE: Limited early bird tickets to see both HARD ROCK ZOMBIES + PRINCE OF DARKNESS for the bargain price of £10 (available when booking for HARD ROCK ZOMBIES). After those have gone, our films cost £6 each (still a bargain!). Strictly adults 18+ only! Dogs welcome (especially Robert).
