About this Event
Baptised in the fire of London is an art show about black London culture. What it means to be from London, the grit, the beauty, the mellowness but also the colour we experience within London. To be ‘Baptised’ is to be made new, in spiritual terms it is to become refreshed better than before. In some ways I believe this is what this city does and can do for you. It can and will change your life for better and for worse. This is what I would like to be depicted within this show. The fire symbolises the burning of, in religous ideology it symbolises the difficulty of a first trial. For Londoners this is what it means to be from a brutal but communal city. It's a burning of self, as life in this country progresses for black londoners we have to shed the city we once grew up and create our own new one. What does that look like? How do we evolve as people in a city that is burning us at the same time. What does it say about Black Britishness? The works will be in conversation with each other. They contrast each other well, but they are all the same in London.
