Join us and our 4 great speakers on July 3 for a panel discussion on alternatives to improve the current UK asylum system for children.
About this Event

The Baobab Centre for Young Survivors in Exile is happy to invite you to its next Baobab Talk. This event will feature a panel of expert speakers who will discuss some of their ideas on how to improve it for young people.

Our four speakers for this event:

  • David Neal, former Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration;
  • Frances Trevena, Barrister and Supervising Lawyer at the Refugee Law Initiative, University of London;
  • Lauren Starkey, Independent Social Worker, Young People's Advocate at Shpresa;
  • Prof. Cornelius Katona, Honorary Medical and Research Director at the Helen Bamber Foundation.

This event is free but spaces are limited to please book your ticket now.

Doors will open at 6pm, with panel discussion from 6:30pm-8pm. There will be time before and after the panel discussion for snacks and drinks and conversations among all guests.

Prof. Cornelius Katona
Could an integration-focused approach mitigate the mental health harms of the UK’s current asylum system?

Prof. Katona is Honorary Medical and Research Director at the and Royal College of Psychiatrists' lead on Refugee and Asylum Mental Health. He recently was Chair of the Steering Group for the and will discuss some of the from this commission.



Lauren Starkey
Improving the UK care system for young asylum seekers

Lauren is a Social Worker specialising in the care of support of separated asylum-seeking children. She has worked in a variety of local authority and NGO settings and she has consistently advocated for major structural changes needed to keep children and young people safe. She currently practices as an Independent Social Worker and as an advocate for the at .



David Neal
A few ideas on how to improve the administration of the UK asylum system

Frances Trevena
A pilot project of an asylum court for children in England
