The Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra

The Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) is a pre-professional, full orchestra for students, led by Jonathan Rush, the Associate Conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. BYSO was created to provide talented young musicians with orchestral training of the highest possible artistic standards.

Launched in 2012, the BSYO comprises three orchestral ensembles of over 250 of the USA Mid-Atlantic Region: Youth Orchestra in the Pre-professional, full orchestra for students grades 9-12, the Concert Orchestra a full orchestra for students grades 7-10, and the String Orchestra for young students through grade 7.

BSYO performs standard orchestral repertoire as well as music by under-represented and living composers. BYSO is part of the Baltimore Symphony, one of America’s leading orchestras and celebrated around the world.

Jonathan Taylor Rush, Conductor

Hailed as a continually rising talent in the conducting world by the Baltimore Sun, Jonathan Taylor Rush brings passion, unique interpretation, and a refreshing energy to the orchestral experience.

In the fall of 2020, Rush was appointed as the Assistant Conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In the fall of 2022, he was promoted to Associate Conductor. Previously, Jonathan served as Music Director of the Buckeye Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Conducting Fellow for the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras. In 2018, Rush was a Project Inclusion Conducting Fellow with the Chicago Sinfonietta, and in 2019, was named Assistant Conductor. With the Chicago Sinfonietta, Jonathan worked alongside music professionals and fellow conductors to help, “redefine classical music,” by changing its face, and encouraging diversity in Orchestras across the United States. At age 22, as winner of the 2018 Respighi Prize in Conducting, Jonathan made his professional orchestra debut with the Chamber Orchestra of New York in the legendary Carnegie Hall. Currently, Jonathan continues to conduct both nationally and internationally, with notable debuts including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Nairobi Philharmonic. In 2023, Jonathan looks forward to notable debuts with the Washington Nation Opera at the Kennedy Center, and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Jonathan’s mentors and former teachers of conducting are Marin Alsop, Mei-Ann Chen, and Joseph Young. Jonathan received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from The Ohio State University, and a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting, from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
