We are reading Unkind: How Kindness Culture Punishes Women by Victoria Smith
Quick summary: Smith starts from the #JustBeKind trend of the 2020s and argues that the idea of women’s “natural” kindness has been repackaged into a cultural force that demands self‑sacrifice, emotional labour, and compliance. She traces how this “kindness culture” appears in child‑play, self‑help, activism, and empowerment discourses, showing how it perpetuates old gendered pressures rather than dismantling them.
