When the seeds of BAHAMA MAMA formed in a Victor farmhouse in 1973, reggae music hadn’t yet caught-on with mainstream audiences in the U.S. But Ron Stackman and his bandmates were already hooked. That same year, in an exchange that would go on to define his life, a friend introduced Stackman to Catch A Fire, the landmark American breakthrough by Bob Marley and The Wailers.
Galvanized by this unfamiliar sound that was at once challenging and irresistible, Stackman, bassist Jim Schwarz, and drummer Lou LaVilla began moving away from the offbeat Mothers Of Invention-type angularity that had defined their approach up to that point. They also started venturing into the local West Indian community and digging through the racks of the independent reggae music shops that dotted Rochester at the time.
Eventually, with the addition of guitarist and principal songwriter Jim Kraut—who returns from Florida to play this show—the trio grew into the six-piece lineup that made history as BAHAMA MAMA. Over the years, the band would go on to tour and/or back the likes of Peter Tosh, Toots and The Maytals, and Burning Spear. Later, as The Majestics, Bahama Mama’s core played as Lee Scratch Perry’s backing band, including the two nights Perry opened sets during The Clash’s legendary run on Broadway.
A once in a lifetime chance to revisit the pivotal moment where reggae won the hearts of millions of American-born youth—and, of course, the glory days of regional landmarks like Red Creek, Scorgie’s, Casablanca, and Buffalo’s, The Bona Vista—this show will feature five of BAHAMA MAMA’s six original members.
