About this Event

P&T Knitwear, in conjunction with the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Center at PEN America, is pleased to welcome Badiucao and Melissa Chan to celebrate the release of their newest book, : a powerful and important graphic novel about global totalitarian futures and the costs of resistance, co-written by an Emmy-nominated journalist and esteemed activist artist.

Badiucao and Melissa Chan will be joined in conversation by James Tager, the Director of Research at PEN America. After the discussion and audience Q&A, Badiucao and Melissa will be signing copies of .

  • This is a ticketed in-store event with limited amphitheater-style seating. Doors open at 6:30pm.
  • Cost of a $5 general admission ticket can be applied towards your purchase of the featured event book or any product in our café the night of an event.
  • Cost of a book bundle ticket reflects the total cost of the feature event book (MSRP plus tax). Each book bundle ticket guarantees ticket holders one (1) copy of the feature event book.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
is a Chinese Australian artist, activist, and political provocateur. One of the most popular and prolific creatives from China, he confronts a variety of social and political issues in his work, often using satire to tackle censorship, authoritarianism, and capitalism. He has exhibited in the U.S., Australia, and throughout Europe. He has been interviewed by The Washington Post, The Guardian, Time, CNN, NBC, and others, and was profiled by The New York Times and CBS News’s “60 Minutes.” In 2020, Badiucao won the Human Rights Foundation’s Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent. He currently lives in exile in Australia. is his debut graphic novel.

is an Emmy-nominated Hong Kong and Taiwanese American foreign correspondent based between Los Angeles and Berlin. She was previously posted in China until she became the first journalist in more than a decade to be expelled by Chinese authorities in 2012. Much of her reporting examines human rights, the rise of global authoritarianism, and the defense of democracies. Her work has taken her from Pyongyang to Moscow to Havana. She has written for The New York Times, where she was nominated for a Loeb Award—business journalism’s highest honor—and The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Time, The Guardian, and more. As a broadcast correspondent, she has reported for VICE News Tonight and Al Jazeera. is her debut graphic novel.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR
is the Director of Research at PEN America. Tager previously led PEN America’s research and campaigning efforts on freedom of expression issues related to the People’s Republic of China, including advocacy for imprisoned writers. In addition to his research, he led PEN America’s involvement in advocacy campaigns including the #FreeLiuXia campaign and other efforts. His Made in Hollywood report is consistently cited as a leading resource on the issue of Chinese governmental influence in Hollywood. Tager is an adjunct professor at New York University’s School of Professional Studies, where he co-teaches a class on US-China relations.
