Synopsis:
Bad Seed is a suspenseful 1954 play by Maxwell Anderson, based on William March's novel, about a seemingly perfect young girl named Rhoda whose mother suspects she is a ruthless, murderous sociopath, leading to a chilling investigation into whether evil is inherent or can be passed down through generations.
Character Breakdowns:
Christine Penmark - Femme presenting, middle aged woman. She is a kind and gentle soul with a soft way of talking. She is the wife of Colonel Kenneth Penmark and the mother of Rhoda Penmark. As the play progresses, her mental state unravels. LEAD
Rhoda Penmark - Femme presenting, 9 year old girl. She is charming, precocious and girlish, on the outside. She is also prone to fits of anger, cunning, and controlling. She is more in control of her world than anyone else. Considering children and adults who can play younger for this role. LEAD
Monica Breedlove- Femme presenting, older woman. She is effusive, boisterous and domineering. She is very vivacious and charismatic, but is sharp and no nonsense. She is the upstairs neighbor to the Penmarks, and very involved in their lives. LEAD
Leroy Jessup - Masc presenting, older man. He is the creepy and sneaky groundskeeper for the Penmarks. He is infatuated with Christine, and has an antagonistic relationship with Rhoda. He has a childlike mind, but is quite clever to Rhoda’s true character. SUPPORTING
Hortense Daigle - Femme presenting, middle aged woman. She is the homely mother of Claude Daigle, a young boy who tragically dies during the show. She is a lush who is drunk every time we see her. She believes there is a connection between the death of her son and Rhoda Penmark, and is determined to figure it out. SUPPORTING
Miss Fern - Femme presenting, young woman. She is the school teacher of Rhoda and Claude. She is stern and very put together, and puts her school's reputation above all. SUPPORTING
