Guided sauna ritual inspired by traditional Lithuanian pirtis. Cold plunge included.
About this Event
What:
  • Greg will lead us through four rounds of sauna, loosely inspired by traditional Lithuanian Pirtis ritual—each round ~10-15 minutes with breaks in between to cool down. Depending on number of participants, we may break up into two-three groups (max 6 people in sauna at a time)
  • Following the ritual, the sauna will be open to use freely.
  • Participants can ask Greg for a vanta treatment, or experiment themselves, see here for explanation:
  • Cold plunge
  • Snacking and hanging

How to prepare:
  • Hydrate—take extra care to be well hydrated before, during and after the experience; electrolyte powders, bananas, and magnesium/potassium supplements are all good resources to properly hydrate.
  • Shower (remove all deodorants, perfumes, or body odors, as smells are intensified inside the sauna)
  • Avoid arriving on a full stomach

What to Bring:
  • Bathing suits are optional, but if you wear one, the ideal is loose, breathable, and comfortable. Natural fibers allow your skin to breathe better. Just towel(s) works.
  • Water bottle
  • A wool hat (helps keep your head cool [I know, counter-intuitive], which is in the highest and therefore hottest part of the tent)
  • Snacks (fruit or something salty recommended, garlic bread?)
  • 2-3 towels (one to protect the wooden bench, one to dry off, one cause you never know)
  • Footwear - slides, crocs, or flip-flops (please remove before stepping into the sauna)
  • Folding chair for chilling between sets

Health and Safety:

The two biggest safety factors are hydration and cooling down post sauna.

In warm weather it’s especially important to finish your sauna session by cooling down, either with a cold shower or cold plunge. (incidentally, this increases health benefits, by forcing your body to heat back up) You should submerge yourself long enough that it becomes uncomfortable. (not just your skin temperature, but your core body temp) You should also cool down between rounds.

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna experience. Examples of ways to increase hydration include: electrolyte tablets, bananas, and magnesium supplements.

There are very few known contraindications for sauna use. They include: unstable angina pectoris, recent myocardial infarction, and severe aortic stenosis. (Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11165553/)
