In 1936 an airplane with a dead engine glided low over isolated and tiny Cape Breton community of Balaine, home to about 20 people. Three children followed the doomed plane, climbing up a hill, and spotting it crashed, nose-down, in a bog. Next to the plane, wounded and stuck in the mud, was pioneering pilot Beryl Markham. She had just become the first person to ever fly from England to North America, and the whole world was searching for her…
