Getting lost in the outdoors can feel intimidating - but with the right skills and preparation, navigation becomes one of the most empowering parts of wilderness travel.
Join us for a Backcountry Clinic focused on the fundamentals of backcountry navigation and the essential skills needed to confidently explore trails, wilderness areas, and off-the-grid destinations.
Presented by: Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) Instructor Mark Jones
Whether you’re completely new to map and compass navigation or just looking for a refresher, this workshop will introduce practical techniques used by hikers, backpackers, and outdoor adventurers to stay found in the backcountry.

- Reading and interpreting topographic (topo) maps
- Understanding contour lines, terrain features, and elevation
- The parts of a compass and how to use them effectively
- Taking bearings and navigating with map and compass together
- Triangulation techniques for determining your location
- What to do if you realize you’re lost
- Tips for route planning and situational awareness
- An introduction to digital navigation tools and apps for modern outdoor travel
