"Ishvara Pranidhana" The Art of Surrender
In the final limb of the niyamas, Ishvara Pranidhana asks us to release the illusion of control, to offer the fruits of our actions to something beyond the personal self. It is both an act of humility and deep faith.
Backbends, with their invitation to expose the front body and reveal the heart, become a living metaphor for this surrender. They demand strength, stability, and courage but also a willingness to soften, to trust, to let go. We’ll journey through the architecture of the spine and the landscape of the heart, learning to balance muscular precision with inner yielding. As we arc backward into deeper spaces, we meet our edges not as barriers, but as thresholds into grace.
In this workshop you’ll learn:
Intelligent warm-ups to prepare the spine, shoulders, and hips for safe, expansive backbends
Techniques for depth and stability in postures like Urdhva Dhanurasana, Purna Dhanurasana, Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana, drop-backs, and more
Breathwork and heart-focused meditation to support emotional release
Exploration of Ishvara Pranidhana: surrender, humility, and trust within challenge
A nurturing closing practice to integrate the openness and ease of the heart
The practice becomes a conversation between will and release, between doing and being. When the mind quietens and the body opens, what remains is Ishvara Pranidhana: the simple, profound act of letting go into the infinite.
