Introduction
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the development of blues music, blues dance quietly emerged. People who suffered from long days would gather in places called Juke Joints, where they could drink, gamble, and dance to the music. This is where the name Juke Joint for blues dance originated. The Jukin' style embodies the unique rhythm and aesthetic characteristics of African American dance, being lively, dynamic, powerful, and highly interactive. Through their bodies, dancers engage in a dialogue with the music, using physical movements to express their experiences and emotions, and shouting about life.
Open Outcry was the Vancouver Stock Exchange and before that back in 1899 it was the old Alhambra Theatre. The theatre’s wooden structure had a feature that resembled an Arabesque arch, or an old-fashioned keyhole…. depending on how you looked at it! But today, Open Outcry has transformed into a retro Restaurant & Bar, where we travel back to the 1900s, engage in dialogue with history, sway, and dance together. We've invited the highly popular band, Teresa and her band, to perform! Come join us for a blues party!
