The time when the Magnificat was sung every day is a few centuries behind us, as is the composition of J.S. Bach’s piece. His Magnificat (BWV 243a) is a celebratory piece for a five-part choir and richly instrumented baroque orchestra, including kettledrums and natural horns. Such lavish performances were reserved for festival days, in this case the eve of the festival of the Visitation. Thanks to his role as the cantor in Leipzig, Bach had no need to skimp on his cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 140) either. Nonetheless, sobriety slips into the work like a Biblical snake, in the form of the first duet between the soprano and bass. Expressions of joy are welcome again in a second cantata, Meine Seel erhebt den Herren (BWV 10), in an outstanding performance by the RIAS Kammerchor and Akademie für Alte Musik.

L'époque où le Magnificat était encore chanté quotidiennement est révolue depuis plusieurs siècles, tout comme la composition de J.S. Bach. Son Magnificat, BWV 243a est une œuvre festive pour chœur à cinq voix et orchestre baroque d’envergure, comprenant des timbales et des trompettes naturelles. Ce genre d’exécution royale était réservé aux jours de fête, en l'occurrence la veille de la Visitation de Marie. Grâce à son poste de cantor à Leipzig, Bach n'avait pas dû faire preuve de parcimonie en écrivant la cantate Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140. Pourtant, l'austérité s'insinue dans l'œuvre tel un serpent biblique dès le premier duo entre la soprano et la basse. Les expressions de joie sont à nouveau les bienvenues dans Meine Seel erhebt den Herren, BWV 10, une deuxième cantate que le RIAS Kammerchor et l'Akademie für Alte Musik interpréteront avec brio.

De tijd dat het Magnificat nog dagelijks gezongen werd, ligt net als de compositie van J.S. Bach al enkele eeuwen achter ons. Bachs Magnificat BWV 243a is een feestelijke toonzetting met vijfstemmig koor en rijk ingevuld barokorkest, inclusief pauken en natuurtrompetten. Zo’n vorstelijke uitvoering was voorbehouden voor feestdagen, in dit geval aan de vooravond van het feest van Maria Visitatie. Dankzij zijn positie als cantor in Leipzig moest Bach ook niet spaarzaam zijn voor de cantate Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 140. Toch sluipt soberheid als een Bijbelse slang het werk binnen in de vorm van het eerste duo tussen sopraan en bas. Uitdrukkingen van vreugde zijn wel opnieuw welkom in Meine Seel erhebt den Herren BWV 10, een tweede cantate die RIAS Kammerchor en Akademie für Alte Musik uitmuntend zullen brengen.
